You’ve heard me talk about finding a workout buddy before.  Not only is working out with a friend WAY more fun but the  friendly competition can make you push just a little bit harder.  Am I right?  But, here’s the truth. If you are looking for a friend to workout with…pick anyone.  If you are looking for a friend to hold you accountable in your health journey…choose wisely.

CHOOSE SOMEONE THAT YOU TRUST!

If you are looking to make some significant changes in your life…be it with regards to fitness, nutrition or overall lifestyle… then you need to set some goals.  (That’s another post altogether so check out my recent blog post on goal setting.) Once your goals are determined…SHARE THEM! Sharing those goals can most definitely leave you feeling vulnerable. And that’s ok.  Choose someone you trust, and share them anyways.  Sometimes just knowing that someone is aware of what you are trying to accomplish is reason enough for you to keep working!

CHOOSE SOMEONE THAT WILL CALL YOU OUT ON YOUR BS!

Part of this means choosing someone that cares enough to check in to see how you are progressing.  Your “person” should never cause you to feel shameful, but they should be someone who understands your desire to reach those goals and will call you out on your crap if they find you making excuses for yourself.

CHOOSE SOMEONE THAT YOU ARE AFRAID TO DISAPPOINT

Maybe this more of a subconscious thing because generally speaking, your goals shouldn’t truly effect your accountability person. However, whoever you choose should matter enough in your life that you don’t want to let them down.  Don’t get me wrong…all goals you create should be all about YOU.  You should be creating change for YOU.  You should be doing this all for YOU.  That said, choosing a person who is invested enough to care about you and that you are afraid to disappoint is enough to keep you going when the going gets tough.

A good accountability partner can make all the difference between kinda meeting your goals and CRUSHING them.  That’s why trainers and coaches are so important because often times, friends are too invested emotionally and become hesitant to be the one to push your forward.

Have I missed something important to look for in an accountability partner?  Who holds you accountable and what makes it work for you?  Message me and let me know!
